IB CURRICULUM

The IB Diploma is the gold standard qualification in providing access to higher education as it is recognised by universities globally and offers a broad, balanced programme of study across six subjects; three at higher level, three at standard level, which must include a language and a science.

Research suggests that there are many benefits to choosing the Diploma Programme (DP). The programme aims to develop students to have a strong breadth and depth of knowledge – students who flourish physically, intellectually, emotionally and ethically. DP students are better able than their peers to cope with demanding workloads, manage their time and meet the expectations placed on them.

IB students follow the Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) programme, prepare an Extended Essay and take the Theory of Knowledge course.

In order to support students and parents as they make the decision about the Diploma, we have devised a series of “Pathways” talks. These begin with a single session in MYP 3 and then there are several sessions in MYP 4 as the final decision gets closer. We also run an Options Fair, for both parents and students. We aim to ensure families feel well-informed of the intricacies of both pathways before students make their final decisions.

A number of opportunities exist for students to develop specialised knowledge and skills in topics that interest them the most. While these opportunities are certainly the best preparation for university education, IB Diploma students also develop the ability to take on new ideas from across the disciplines throughout their lives.

More than simply a qualification, the IB Diploma provides a distinctive educational experience. It allows students to study a wide range of subjects throughout their final 2 years at school, while giving them the freedom to choose which subjects to study in greater depth.

The IB Diploma offers a broad, balanced programme of study across six subjects; three at higher level and three at standard level, which must include a language and a science. Students select the six subjects by choosing one from each of the following groups:

Group 1

First Language – English/ Spanish Language and Literature, or school supported self-study of the literature course

Group 2

Second Language –Spanish, English B. Spanish ab initio for those beginning to learn the language

Group 3

Individuals and Society – Business Management, Global Politics (all in English) History in Spanish

Group 4

Experimental Sciences – Biology, Chemistry (Spanish or English), Physics in Spanish. Environmental Systems and Societies only in Spanish

Group 5

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches HL (Spanish or English) , Mathematics: Applications and Interpretations SL (Spanish or English)

Group 6

Arts and Electives – Music (in English), Visual Arts (in English), Economics HL (in English) or Chemistry HL (English or Spanish), French B or German B as a language acquisition class, Spanish ab initio and Self-Taught Literature A.

*Please note that if your son or daughter is planning on taking the IB Diploma as a pathway to a European university then it is important that your family is aware of specific country/university requirements regarding the diploma.

Self Taught DP Courses

At the start of 2020 San Patricio International School entered into a partnership with MIH Educational Services Ltd, the world’s number one online tutorial service for mother tongue literature students in the IB Diploma Programme (the IB stipulates that the students MUST choice their mother tongue in order to achieve the full Diploma programme). Through this collaboration our school is able to fully support all our DP students whose mother tongue is not taught in the school.  The IB’s School-Supported Self-Taught (SSST) Literature A course is available in over 60 languages and every DP student in our school now has the opportunity to study this wonderful literature course in and through their mother tongue. It exists at SL (Standard Level) only.

San Patricio and MIH Educational Services Ltd have established an aligned programme that allows all the SSST students to progress through the course at the same pace and with the same level of in-school as well as online support.  Our SSST students meet regularly online with their respective mother tongue tutors.  During their online sessions they discuss the contents and the style of the literary works, the characteristics of literary commentary and analysis in the mother tongue, and the skills and features necessary for the IB assessments at the end of the course.

The tutorial Self taught additional fee is USD 2,200 per student (approx - subject to change) for 30 hours of support over the two years of the DP.  The tutorial time will be spread out over the two years  of Diploma. This fee will apply to all students starting the DP (obligatory for international students whose level of English or Spanish is not considered as Language A).

Testimonial

I am currently a second year student of chemical engineering at one of the best universities in Europe, and I'm extremely grateful for how much ISSPToledo prepared me for this journey. Doing IB was exactly what I needed to succeed in my university studies, and thanks to the teachers I was able to find my passion for the subjects I decided to pursue further. Living in the boarding house showed me how to live with other people and appreciate other cultures and personalities, which turned out to be extremely important when studying abroad. Being part of the San Patricio community was not only a great experience, but also a great value for the future. Joining ISSPT was the best decision I could've made
